I am reluctant to accept that leaders, regardless of the country they represent, especially during this time of crisis, express themselves publicly without having analyzed in depth the impact those words will have on the same people who are already terrified and distressed due to the COVID-19 global health crisis. For that same reason, it is of utmost importance to carefully consider the feelings that these words can provoke, given the fact that this crisis involves all the citizens of this planet.
Under the unique circumstances in which this crisis is occurring, it has unexpectedly emerged as a unique expression of “planetary collectivism”, it is a new phenomenon that is happening with this global magnitude for the first time in the history of humanity, but it well known to happen with different magnitudes on every crisis. This noticeable emergent behavior could represents a challenge for the leaders of this world if is taken as an a signal of “ the need for unity”, if we don’t see through this, the magnitude of how entangled and dependent of each other we are, please re-examine this painful situation again.
This new global manifestation, is like a “ light out of the darkness “ and as times passes by it is becoming more evident, to the point that it is placing additional responsibilities on every leader of the world on the limits they need to establish on the ways and emotional content of their public expressions. know more than ever, they must carefully examine that emotional content because of the immediate consequences those expressions will have on the people of this global community. In my personal opinion this matter should consider and evaluated by every public communicator. To reinforce my opinion just consider this very well known fact; when individuals, families, communities or countries are facing life threatening situations, like COVID-19 represents, catastrophic negative emotional changes emerges as an immediate consequence. It is important to alert everyone that this is already happening. Without doubts I will say that everyone in this planet aware of this pandemia, are already experiencing feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, and worthlessness, which are some of the most recognizable symptoms of Major Depressive Disorders.
It is our duty to keep in mind, at all times, that this is a planetary crisis and, even though it is necessary to face reality, perhaps the way in which we are informed about it, specially content, which requires the inclusion of all facts, needs to be reviewed. Meaning that humanity needs to know directly from the scientific community on a detailed step by step basis , what, how and where this research is being performed, secrecy is not acceptable, when the complete population of these world, our species , is in danger. Not knowing is unacceptable, information should flows continuously directly from the experts.
Any institution private or public that see this suffering as a busyness opportunity , in my personal opinion should be considered a moral criminal act against humanity, these are not times for secrecy but for sacrifices, solidarity and fast responses, performed in the same way and magnitude that physicians are facing every where in the world, as a life risk situation, it is what we expect from billionaire pharmaceutical, healthcare, scientific investigation centers, of every corner of this planet, they are not expected to risk their lives or lifestyles, others are doing that for them, but they are expected to donate; donate research lab time, donate scientists research time, medical equipment for doctors and hospitals. Up to this day humanity is bearing the whole wait of this crisis, the same sacrifice we haven’t seen yet from them, aside from very shy responses.
Right now, we need a press as aggressive as they are when pursuing a political investigation. We need answers to questions such as: “why science in general is giving the world an impression of powerlessness and confusion. ” This attitude is catastrophically detrimental to the mental health of people who are already going through a crisis, to be practically forced to listen “our leaders ?” at all times, only reporting on the death toll, which almost seems like a competition between cities and countries, to show which one of them has the Highest Scored of the death hourly daily records, there is such a persistence on this reports, that a subtle morbouselike a quota.
On the other hand, the good news from the scientific community is by far absent, unclear, and less specific than that of political and government leaders. The ability of citizens to understand science has often been misjudged by the scientific community. I must point out that we are living in a new era, a time in which several generations have access to specific information of all kinds, inclusive scientific and where teenagers (personally known to me) from many public schools have already learned how to use a molecular mass spectrometer and other instruments, considered high-level science technology, as part of summer projects. Everybody knows about Crisp PR technique, topological disclinations and dislocations ,partial lattice defects, excitons, phonons, etc. Don’t be shy, people will understand if you explain it in the most simple terms,as you should start any conjecture presentation.
City by city, country by country, the loss of human life is reported in the same cold way. People of the world are requesting answers and explanation in detail , of what are you doing to help collectively alleviate, their distressed minds. As a scientific person, I read daily, weekly, more than 30 magazines from all fields of science, from particles, materials, physics, astrophysics, nanotechnology, molecular biology and everything I can get about medicine.
It makes me feel desperate and betrayed by reading and listening to universities and corporate representatives, talking about COVID-19, with statements that include business details that allow people to think more about money, business or grants, more absorbed in problems of publishing a peer-reviewed paper, rather than emphasizing the serious efforts that are necessary of the international scientific community to overcome selfish behaviors, and humanity by finding solutions and a cure. People and the world need a “free real-time international scientific teams of experts, freed from government and corporate constraints” without current levels of insane competitiveness, and just making history for the first time, working together and doing something for humanity. This is a worldwide emergency, depending on your own behaviors, on what you did, do or have done. Many governments, corporations and educational institutions are not fully and visibly assuming full commitment and responsibility, billions of people in distress will notice, those who have fail in humanity will bear the negative mark forever.
Finally, let me say that with all the scientific advances and tools we have at the moment, this global crisis of humanity should have been on the verge of being resolved. As I have seen in my patients, and also corroborated with my colleagues the daily reports of death figures, combined with the need and requirements for social distance and isolation, inevitably creates a feeling of collective powerlessness.
In addition to this complexity, there are millions of people who cannot cry or bury their loved ones; given the aforementioned feeling of hopelessness, helplessness, and worthlessness, the sudden change in lifestyle (also a loss), and the additional financial stressors exemplified by the 16.8 million workers in the US who were left unemployed in recent weeks (only in one country), is rapidly leading to a secondary crisis of great proportions not visible to those who are not trained in this field, I mean “The First Massive Depressive Crisis of Global Expression and perhaps the largest mental health crisis that have taken place in the history of humanity. Aided by a widespread impression that “science cannot help, that scientists have been absent and that the only hope they have are us, physicians, noticing that governments and industries have abandoned them and are dying for lack of equipment and protection. “Today I learned that two other colleagues known to me died in the intensive care units, as a result of the disease COVID 19. The world population has discovered a fragmented scientific community, isolated and wearing a straitjacket imposed by the Public and Private institutions for which they work.
And finally, I understand that this article could become a very useful way to alert the members of the WHO, to consider the need to activate the protocols to start the international readiness to face a mental health crisis of huge proportions that is already manifesting itself and constitutes another global challenge concurrently with the ongoing COVID-19 primary global crisis.
